Five senior athletes commit to college teams

Posted on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 12:03 pm

Alexia Wilson (Lex), Shelby Modlin and Micahaela Lanae’ Beverly (Milay) sign to their respective teams.

Lamar Lucas will attend NCAA Division 1 Old Dominion University.

Alonzo Turner will attend Christopher Newport University.

In an inspiring statement to the perseverance and aptitude of student athletes at Colonial Beach High School, five seniors will join new teams at their respective colleges. It is truly a great achievement to be accepted and attend college. These graduates have strived harder and farther and showcased not only their academic abilities but also their physical talents to propel them to the next level of competition. A quick google search shows that less than 6 percent of high school players end up on college rosters. The Colonial Beach High School class of 2017 should be proud.
Alexia Wilson (Lex) will attend Bridgewater College in the fall and plan to major in Computer Science. Lex has been a standout player for the Varsity Girls Basketball team at Colonial Beach leading the team well into the state playoffs. Lex’s favorite sports memory is, naturally, when she surpassed 1000 career points in her senior year. Her accolades include the team MVP, 1st Team All-Conference, and 2nd Team All-Region as well as making the Superintendents list.
Michaela Lanae’ Beverly (Milay) chose Mary Baldwin University as her higher education institution. Milay will continue her Volleyball court dominance for the Fighting Squirrels as she pursues a degree in Elementary Education. A stellar student with all A’s Honor Roll and on the Superintendents list, Milay is also 1st Team All-Conference, 2nd Team All-Conference, All Academic, and earned awards in leadership for the Drifter’s Volleyball team. Last season was the “winningest” volleyball season in the history of the school and a great way to end Milay’s high school career.
Shelby Modlin signed to cheer for Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Shelby will study nursing while she competes for the Cougars in the flyer position. Shelby loves the Danville area and felt her choice of Averett an easy decision. Her awards include making All-Conference and her favorit memory is competing for the first time in her sophomore year, placing 3rd in Districts and moving on to regionals.
Not present at the signing ceremony but continuing their football careers into the college level are Alonzo Turner and Lamar Lucas. Turner will attend Chistopher Newport University. Lucas chose Old Dominion University. ODU is a NCAA Division 1 team and Lucas has been invited as a preferred walk-on for the upcoming fall season.
