The Rappahannock JV softball team hosted a pair of NND contests at home last week. On Tuesday the Raiders took on Washington and Lee and won with a 13-0 result in a 5 inning run-rule game. Rachel Douglas recorded her second no-hitter of the season and was one walk away from a perfect game. The Raider defense faced the minimum number of batters as catcher Jordan Whelan retired the only Eagle base runner on a steal attempt. Whelan and Summer Sanders were both 2-3 at the plate for RHS. Later in the week the Raiders won a tight 10-7 game against a spirited Essex team. Both pitchers (Douglas and Packett) retired opposing sides in order to start the game. The Essex offense struck first getting two second inning runs after 3 Raider errors. RHS tied the game in the top of the inning but Essex took advantage of 2 more RHS errors to take a 5-2 lead. Rappahannock stormed back in their half of the 3rd tying the game at 5. Rappahannock scored 5 more times to take a 10-5 lead into the 7th. However, EHS refused to go quietly getting two runs and bringing the tying run to the plate before Douglas ended the game with her 5th strikeout. Douglas pitched well allowing only 2 EHS hits and walking 2 but 7 errors plagued the Raider defense. The Raider power surge in the middle of the game was provided by Lexi Hanks who went 2-4 with two doubles. Summer Sanders also went 2-4 and Kaitlyn Hamilton was 2-2. RHS is 11-0 as they prepare for Northumberland and Colonial Beach.

On April 14, Travis Hundley and Jazmine Houston, both of Tappahannock, won second and third place ribbons at the Special Olympics Bowl America in Manssas. Tashia Lowe of Gwynn also won second place in her age division.  Competing against her in the same division, Ryan Cammarata, of Ophelia, won third.  Also bowling for Area 28 was Scottie Hinson, of Tappahannock, and Courtney Reisner of Kilmarnock. Practice will continue until the state summer games June 8-10 in Richmond.  Area 28 will be sending five bowlers to the state competition.  For more information, to volunteer or to make a donation, contact Chris Cammarata at 804-761-3206 or email csrnfnp@hotmail.com.
