A Maryland man was arrested in Colonial Beach and charged with multiple crimes, including breaking and entering and resisting arrest.
Colonial Beach Police Chief Kenneth Blevins Sr. said that Brian A. Gant, 28, of Accokeek, Md., was charged with breaking and entering with the intent to commit larceny, grand larceny, and resisting arrest.
Blevins said Gant was arrested on Aug. 2 after police were called to investigate an alarm that was activated at Grandma’s Jewelry Box located at 509 Colonial Ave.
Officer David Mundie responded to the call and met the store owner, who had been contacted by the alarm company, at the premises. Blevins said the front door had been forced open and an undisclosed amount of money had been removed from the store.
“Mundie and the owner viewed the store security camera and Mundie recognized the person that had entered the store as a suspicious person he had checked and identified earlier,” Blevins said. “Mundie began and immediate search of the area and located [the suspect] neat the intersection of Colonial Avenue and Jackson Street.”
At this point, said Blevins, Mundie tried to apprehend Gant, but the man fled the scene on foot.
Mundie gave chase, Blevins said. After pursuing Gant down one block, Mundie used his taser to take Gant into custody.
Gant is currently being held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail and was scheduled to appear in Westmoreland County’s General District Court on Aug. 7.
