Gloria Jean Maxey Huggins

 

Gloria Jean Maxey Huggins, 80, of Montross, passed away on Aug. 26, 2012.  She was the widow of Bill Huggins, to whom she was married for 57 years, a homemaker and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Tommy Huggins (Mary Beth) of Warsaw; daughters, Lucretia Pizzano (William) of Damascus, Md. and Rexann Bassler  (Donald) of Anchorage, Alaska, and a brother, Raymond Maxey (Laverne) of Mechanicsville, Va. and daughter in law, Brenda Huggins of Montross.  Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, Heather Grimes (Edwin) of Montross, Rachel Ferrar (Joseph) of Fredericksburg, Joshua Huggins

(Graciela) of Warsaw Dawn Alexander (Scott) of California, Aaron Harbridge of Lynchburg, Thomas, Danielle, Ben, Lillian and Colette Bassler of Anchorage, Alaska, and Brittany, Brooke and Mara Pizzano of Damascus, Md. and eight great-grandchildren, Edwin, Abigail, Olivia, and Emilye Grimes of Montross, Joseph, and Luke Ferrar of Fredericksburg and Sadie and  Brandon Alexander of  California

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Harbridge and brother, H. B. Maxey, Jr.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2012 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Cemetery, Oak Grove, VA.  Reverend Willard Bowen officiated.

John Thomas Maines

 

John Thomas Maines, 69, of Coles Point, passed away on Aug. 26, 2012.  He was the owner-operator of B & J Transmissions, an automobile repair business for many years. He loved racing his Ford truck on the weekends and helping others race their vehicles.  He was a member of Coles Point United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Herbert Maines; sons, Richard E. Biemiller of Norfolk and Seth Biemiller of Coles Point, and daughter, Lynn Ellen Greene and husband, Richard, of Pennsylvania.  He is also survived by brothers, David Maines (Janice), Robert Maines, Richard Maines (Joyce) and Joey Maines and sisters, Judy Voorhies (Frank), Marilyn Delgado, CeCe Meinhardt (Woody)  and Mary Fay Melfelt (Richard); sister in law, Barbara Ann Maines, and six grandchildren.

Because of his strong support for animal adoption, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Westmoreland County Animal Shelter, PO Box 1000, Montross, Va. 22520.

Deacon John Andrew Smith

John Andrew Smith, 63, affectionately known as “Johnny Boy”, Johnny Man”, and “Mr. Man”, passed away on Aug. 20, 2012 at his home in Mt. Holly. He was born July 26, 1949 to the late Norman E. Smith Sr. and Marie J. Smith.

John joined Salem Baptist Church at an early age. He attended the Westmoreland County School System graduating from AT Johnson High School in 1967.

John joined the Army in April of 1969 and was honorable discharged in 1971.

After returning to Westmoreland County, he opened and operated Smith’s Auto Body and later owned Last Chance Trucking.

John was joined in Holy matrimony to Ernestine Lane Wise on Nov. 14, 2011.

John leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Ernestine; one daughter, Aretha Martin (Richard); one son, John A. Smith Jr.; three stepdaughters, Emily Wise, Miriam Keeve and Sherry McDowney; one stepson, Earl Wise Jr.; three brothers; one sister; sister-in-law; six grandchildren; two uncles; one aunt, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 25 at Salem Baptist Church. Rev. William I. Curry Sr. officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Pearl Mae Sanford Sydnor

 

Pearl Mae Sanford Sydnor, 72, of Montross, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012.  She was a retired bank teller with 42 years of service and retired from The Bank of Lancaster; a member of Providence United Methodist Church and a life member of Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary.

She was born on April 24, 1940 to the late Harvey and Geneva Sanford.

She is survived by her wonderful husband, William A. “Billy” Sydnor, and a sister Virginia L. Sanford of Montross.  Also surviving are nieces, Sheila S. Clark (Curtis) , Charlotte Balderson (Elwyn); nephews; William E. Hinson (Diane); all of Montross, and Charles L. Hinson (Judy), of Warsaw; great nieces, Christy Crabbe (Ronnie) , Stephanie Jones (Brad), Pamela Clark and great nephew, C. W. Clark; and great great niece Madison Jones and  great great nephew Brody Jones.  She is also survived by sister in law, Betty Foley and Elsie Nash (Russell), and devoted friend and little sister, Ruth Packett (Stanley) and many other friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 at Providence United Methodist Church, Chiltons, Va.  Reverend John Ward and Pastor Wade Wilkins officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers were Buzzy Trader, Wayne Bryan, Elton Lankford, Curtis Clark, Charles L. Hinson, William Hinson, Ray Balderson, Jimmy White and Jimmy Packett. Honorary pallbearers were Cathy Lankford, Ruth Packett, Stanley Packett, Helen Kilmon, Betty Trader, Joyce Sydnor, Pam Fawver, Judy Sydnor, Barbara Hundley, Walter Balderson, John and Becky Harrington, Nancy and Everett Harvey, Les and Jane Kay Sisson, Elaine Harrington, Barbara Lee Hall, Peggy Burner, Marjorie Dyke, Estelle Jenkins, Rachel and Charlie Hill, Brenda and Bobby Reamy and the Class of 1959 of Washington and Lee High School.
