M. Janice Groves

M. Janice Groves, 77, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Mrs. Groves was the owner and operator of Smithfield Farms Country Store in Oak Grove.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Algernon “Mickey” Groves; one daughter, Sandy Renee Dailey of Colonial Beach; two sons, Larry Ross Groves of Oak Grove and Michael Groves of Richmond; six grandchildren, Andrew, Christopher, Nicholas, Mickey, Samantha and Christina; and seven great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by two children, Debra Groves and Timmy Groves; and one grand­son, Kenny Hott.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 30 at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Rev. Randall Snipes offi­ciated. Burial followed in St. Peter’s cemetery, Oak Grove.

James C. Naylor

James C. Naylor, 75, of Montross, passed away Sept. 24, 2012, surround­ed by his wife and loving family. He was born in Cortland, son of the late Clifton and Agnes Naylor.

Jim had been employed by SCM of Cortland and Brockway, of Cortland.

He enjoyed hunt­ing, fishing, boating, the snowmobile and especial­ly golf.

He leaves behind his wife Beverly (Walrod) Naylor; son, James Naylor Jr. and wife Susan; daughters, Tracie Decker, husband Ronald, and Kimberly Zimmerman, husband Robert; grand­children, Jason and Jessica Naylor, Meghan and Eric Decker, and Mackenzie and Gavin Zimmerman; great-grandchildren, Jason, Riley, Caitlyn, Cassidy and Jasmine, many nieces, nephews and cousins spread far and wide. He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Noble.

Service will be private.

Catherine Hutt O’Bier

Catherine Hutt O’Bier, 84, of Montross, widow of Durward “Pat” O’Bier passed away on Sept. 26, 2012. She had retired as a caregiver at Sunset Lodge and was a mem­ber of Currioman Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Durward O’Bier Jr. and his wife, Loney; daughter, Claudia Barker and her husband, Bob; grandchildren, Cathy Bennett, Lynn Hayes, Patrick O’Bier, and Cynthia Woolard; seven great-grandchildren, Faith, Brie, Caroline, Alisyn, Peyton, Elena and Aidan; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth O’Bier, Louise Hayden and Rebecca Bowles, and special friend, Margaret Stosch.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 29 at Currioman Baptist Church, Zacata. Rev. William Burress and Rev. John Penny officiated. Rev. David McEntire was soloist. Interment was in Coan Baptist Church cemetery, Heathsville. Pallbearers were Neil Heitchew, George Hutt, John Volk, Frank Bennett, Danny Riley, Patrick O’Bier, William Ambrose and Walker George. Ellen Yeakle

Ellen Elizabeth Walters Yeakle, 95, of Colonial Beach passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012.

Ellen was born April 25, 1917, in Washington, D.C., to Helen Petitte Brill and John Walters. She married Joseph Yeakle on April 2, 1966, in Bailey’s Crossroads.

Prior to her retirement, Ellen worked for the fed­eral government in civil service. She was a Senior Regent and lifetime mem­ber of the Women of the Moose. Ellen loved entertaining family and friends at her Colonial Beach home. Her hobbies included bowling, deco­rating, gardening, col­lecting lawn ornaments, taking long drives in the Virginia countryside and cheering her Washington Redskins.

Ellen is survived by a son, John A. Dugan Jr.; grandchildren, Kathy Dugan Eickhoff (Bob) and John A. Dugan III; great-grandchildren, Matt Eickhoff (Lori), Maddie Eickhoff and Bethani Dugan; brother, George Brill (Pat), and nieces and nephews. She was preced­ed in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services were held Oct. 1 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Interment followed in Historyland Memorial Park, King George.
