Local football teams bound for playoffs
The Virginia High School League announced its 2012 Football Sectional playoffs over the weekend and five teams from Northern Neck will contend for a state championship. Out of the five teams, only one will travel in the opening round beginning this Friday.
In division 2 of the eastern sectional playoffs, ninth seeded Washington & Lee (7-3) will travel to eighth-seed East Rockingham (7-3) on Nov. 9. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Then top-seeded Essex (10-0) will host 16th seeded Luray (3-7) on Nov. 9. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Essex and W&L finished the year as two of the top ranked Division 2 teams in the state. Essex ended the year as the top ranked team followed by 20th ranked W&L.
In Division 1, eighth seeded Rappahannock (6-4) will host ninth seeded Covington (5-5) on Nov. 9. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Then in Westmoreland County, 11th seeded Lancaster (5-5) will travel to sixth seeded Colonial Beach (6-4) on Nov. 9 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Colonial Beach and Rappahannock finished the year as two of the top ranked Division 1 teams in the state. Colonial Beach ended the year as the 12th ranked team followed by 15th ranked Rappahannock.
Colonial Beach fans must keep in the mind the following changes for Friday’s football game: the cost of entry per person is $7, Colonial Beach and Senior Citizen passes will not be accepted. Only certain passes through the VHSL and VHSCA will be accepted.
