Beach kicks off season
By Suzy Pietras-Smith
December 1 at 1 p.m. starts off the holiday season in Colonial Beach as Santa Claus comes to town on his sleigh, along with his lovely wife, Mrs. S. Claus as part of the Chamber of Commerce’s annual WinterFest and Santa Land. The day starts with a parade that brings Santa from the Rankin’s True Value shopping center to Town Hill.
On the hill there will be several activities for the young and young at heart to take part in, including visits with Santa for the youngsters. Parents are encouraged to bring their own cameras as there is not a professional photographer scheduled as of press time.
Choirs from local churches will perform on the town stage. There will be games for kids throughout the afternoon. In the gingerbread house there will be baked goods, and hot chocolate.
The Chamber will raffle a pair of bicycles and hold a 50/50 raffle, so make sure you have your dollars ready. Also planned are live Christmas tree sales. For more information please contact Jean Conaty at 804-214-9508.
At 4:30 PM Mayor Fred Rummage, along with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, will light the town Christmas tree from the Town Stage.
Following the end of festivities on Town Hill, the 12th annual Lighted Boat Parade will begin at 5:30 PM near the Point in town, run past the Town Pier and Boardwalk area, and back to the Point. Following the parade, the boats’ Captains and Crew will convene at Dockside Restaurant for awards.
This parade is sponsored by The Colonial Yacht Club and Dockside. For more information on the boat parade, contact Carey Geddes at email@example.com.
The next big holiday activity is the Museum and Historical Society sponsored 2012 Christmas Home and Light tour on December 8. The cost is $15; $12 for Historical Society members. Everyone is to meet at the Museum at 5:30 PM for light refreshments prior to leaving at 6:00 PM for the homes tour. For more information, contact Betty at 804-224-8619 or Jean at 804-214-9508.
