Lady Eagles fall to defending region champs, 50-38

The Rappahannnock girls’ basketball team shifted its defense in the second half and turned what had been a close game into a runaway victory over Washington and Lee in Montross on Friday night.

Washington & Lee’s Teondra Brooks looks for an open shot against the defending Region A Division 1 Champion Rappahannock Raiders.
Last Friday, the Lady Eagles fell to the Raiders during game one of the Golden Eagle Booster Club Classic 50-38. The district regular season begins the first week of January.

With the 50-38 win Ellen Gaines’ team moved to 6-1.  “We used a different defensive press in the second half and they seemed to play harder,” Gaines said.  “We started out flat.  I don’t know why.  Maybe it was nerves.”

Both teams seemed a little slow at first, but they got warm and eventually Rappahannock caught fire.  The Raiders scored 27 points in the first 24 minutes of play.  In the final eight minutes that made up the fourth quarter, the Raiders put up 23 points, more than half by Selene Epps.  Epps had eight points going into the fourth quarter.  In the final eight minutes she scored 12.  Epps went three of four from the line and led all scorers with 20 on the night.  Cedara Ashton was also in double figures for the Raiders with 13.

“We did not play good defense on them,” said W&L Coach Kelsey Farmer whose team moved to 2-9 with the loss.  “We scrambled too much.  We got the wrong touches and the wrong passes to avoid the press.”

Rappahannock moved the ball into the middle of W&L’s defense and managed to expand on what was only a five-point, 27-22 score at the end of the third quarter.

Jaid White led the W&L scoring hitting two of four from the line and putting up three three-pointers on the way to 17 points.
