Eagles drop over 40 points in Classic over Raiders

Washington & Lee’s Boys Basketball Team took advantage of a skittish Rappahannock team Friday night and rolled to a blowout victory in Montross.

Washington & Lee’s Milan Bullock finds a way to the basket avoiding Rappahannock’s Kelvonte Ellis during game two of the Golden Eagle Booster Club Classic last Friday. W&L went on to win the game 87-46 over Rappahannock. The district regular season begins the first week of January.

George Hunter whose team moved to 4-7.  “We’ve made mistakes.  We’ve had mental lapses, but we have always been prepared.  Sometimes nervousness and communication has hurt us, but tonight wasn’t like that.  They got me hyped,” Hunter said and then emphasizing his point.  “They got me hyped.  So I knew they were ready to play.”

The Eagles proved to be more than ready, lifting off to a huge early lead and holding for a solid 32 minutes.

Rappahannock struggled all night against W&L’s aggressive defense, especially its press.  Rappahannock had at least 30 turnovers, according to Rappahannock head coach Jonas Ankrom.  “Their press got to us.  We got down, and we kinda rolled over.  They lacked preparation and that was my fault,” Ankrom added.  The big holiday game was more than the young Raiders could handle.  “We were like a deer in the headlights.  We were in front of a big crowd, and we lost our focus.”

W&L led 22-8 at the end of the first quarter and carried a 40-22 lead at halftime.  The Eagles opened up the game in the final quarter.  Leading by 22 going into the fourth, the Eagles out-scored the Raiders by 19 in the final eight minutes.

The Eagles’ Treshawn Brown led all scorers with 27.  He scored four three pointers and went five of six from the free-throw line.  Milan Bullock added 25 including one three pointer. JaQuan Thompson and Kilvante Newton led the Raiders with eight points each.  On January 4 Rappahannock plays Colonial Beach.  That same day W&L will play Northumberland.
