The Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary held their Installation of Officers and awards banquet last Saturday. The volunteers cooked and decorated to make this a memorable evening for their deserving members and the friends, family and supporters of the department who came out in force for the evening.
President Tim Trivett Sr. welcomed the nearly 100 people to the event and welcomed Auxiliary Chaplain Arbutus Sanford to the podium who gave an interesting invocation including a prayer for first responders. She also made a plea, much to the amusement of the audience, that the Guest Speaker keep his speech short.
The Guest Speaker Lloyd Runnett, Retired Battalion Chief from Henrico County, came to the podium with a twinkle in his eye before getting down to the nitty gritty of what it takes to be an effective first responder. Runnett, who also teaches at the National Fire Academy, reminded the audience that people affected by a disaster don’t care who is paid and who is a volunteer.
“911,” he said, “is not in the yellow pages.”
His credo is to treat all people with “the 4 C’s”: courtesy, competence, commitment and compassion. His speech was inspiring. He reminded people of the tragedy in upstate New York when first responders were deliberately shot by a crazed man as they came to put out a fire. “When,” he asked,” did we become targets?”
Mayor Mike Hamm presided over the swearing in of new officers. The CBVFD Officers for 2013 are: President, Tim Trivett Sr.; Vice President, Donald Robey; Secretary, Tina Fenwick; Treasurer, Frances Bowen; Asst. Amanda Saulnier presented a check to the Chief for $9,500 raised by the Ladies Auxiliary. Chief Robey emphasized they simply couldn’t do what they do without the support of the Auxiliary. Saulnier presented a special award to Captain Chris Saulnier who was a great help to the Auxiliary. Treasurer Sandy Bone surprised Amanda with The Jessie C. Reed Award for Outstanding Service, which is voted on by the members. Amanda was speechless.
Department Awards began with an award to Mayor Hamm for the help the town gave to the Department including $112,000 for the purchase of air packs. Another award was presented to Bill Seay who represented the CBPD for the help received by the Department and to C.O. Balderson for help from the Sheriffs’ Department.
Chief Robey presented awards to the top five responders for calls. This year there was a tie for 5th so both Timmy Massey and Brandon Robey received plaques for 225 calls. Fourth place with 238 calls went to Tommy Massey; third place with 303 calls went to Chris Saulnier; second place was earned by Bill Sanford Jr. with 304 calls and first place went to Bill Sanford Sr. with a whopping 537 calls.
The Chiefs Award went to Tommy Massey and the Firefighter of the Year went to Billy Sanford Sr. Total man hours by the CBVFD was 6004.14 hours.
We owe a debt of thanks to all the many volunteers that are on call day and night to protect us. Remember them in your prayers and support their endeavors as they support all of us in the community.
