The Colonial Beach Drifters entered into the week as the leader in the Northern Neck District winning over Rappahannock and two of last year’s district finalists in Essex and Lancaster. Hosting their county rivals from Washington & Lee High School, they Drifters won 57-53 and they won on the road over Northumberland 51-50.
Washington & Lee post player Jeremy Turner challenged by Colonial Beach guard Keane Foster and the Drifters’ defense in the second half of the last week’s district game. The Drifters ended last week defeating all five of the Northern Neck District teams.
Colonial Beach’s Montie Gould led the team with 16 points after sitting most of the third quarter, but teammate Shamar Shanks picked up the slack scoring 11.
Washington & Lee’s Trey Brown tied Gould with 16 points and was followed by Milan Bullock with 10.
Sidney Horton, of Colonial Beach, chipped in with nine, followed by Ethan Harbin with eight, Parrish Muse with six, Keane Foster with five and Marquel Harris with two.
Washington & Lee’s scorers included Jeremy Turner with six, Terrin Dickerson, CJ Harris and Kwame Gray with five each, Davon Hamilton with four, and Marik Roy with two.
Shanks final free throw of the game gave the Colonial Beach Basketball Team some breathing room last week. In a close game with Northumberland, Colonial Beach won on the road 51-50 to claim their fifth straight win and retain the top spot in the Northern Neck District.
Foster had the hot hand scoring 13 points, followed by Gould with 12.
Shanks knocked down the single free throw to give the Drifters the win scored 10 points, followed by Horton with eight, and Harbin and Muse with three each.
Wesley Jackson of Northumberland was the high scorer of the night with 14 points along with Aaron Lewis with 13.
Keith Bryant chipped in with eight points followed by Dashawd Murphy, Dorian Morris and Kyle Elmore with four each, and Hakeem Shabazz with three.
Colonial Beach sealed two more district victories to improve their district record to 4-1. This came after a 65-27 victory over the Washington & Lee Eagles and a 66-61 win over the Northumberland Indians. The loss for W&L marked their eighth straight loss this season and first district loss for the Indians.
Caneishia Fulcher led Colonial Beach recording a double-double with 22 points and 10 assists.
W&L’s Kendawanna Fulcher led the Lady Eagles with 11 points.
Colonial Beach’s Karley Inscoe chipped in with 16 points, followed by Billie Gould with eight, Megan Seamen with six, McKenzie Conway with five, Deniya Newman with four, and Kaitlyn Profitt and Emily Parks with two each.
W&L’s Alexia Tate contributed to the scoring cause with nine points, followed by Teondra Brooks with three, and Y’Shina Johnson and Aimanni Henry with two each.
Gould led the Drifters in the 66-61 win with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Megan Seamen led the team scoring with 16 points followed by Karley Inscoe with 15, Caneishia Fulcher with nine, Deniya Newman with eight and McKenzie Conway with six.
Northumberland’s Nia Jones knocked down 26 points and was joined by Justice Gordon with 13, Rajaa Shabazz and Mary Kathryn Hall with nine each, and Bria Barbour and Tylisha Crockett with two each.
The Essex home game against Washington & Lee scheduled for Jan. 17 was rescheduled to Jan. 28. JV starts at 6 p.m. followed by the Varsity at 7 p.m.
