The Washington & Lee High School Wrestling Team captured the 2013 Border Brawl Battle of the Buoy Title. This came in their sixth straight win over Northumberland in a 49-27 victory.
Then, earlier in the week at the WhiteWave Foods Cougar Classic, W&L’s wrestling placed fifth among some tough competition. AA Harrisonburg was the top finisher with 191 points ahead of W&L with 98.5 points.
W&L’s Markeyse Thompson (285-pounds) and Jose Chipres (152 lbs.) scored the highest for their team with second place finishes each. Third place finishers included Rasckey DeJesus (120 lbs.) finished the day with a 3-1 record, James Snider (126 lbs.) with a 2-1 record, Sam McGill (152 lbs.) with a 4-1 record, Gabe Loesel (195) with a 3-1 record and Sergei Minor (106 lbs.) with a 1-2 record finished in fourth.
W&L’s Josh Whitfield (106 lbs.), Luis Chipres (132 lbs.), Manoa Wurth (220 lbs.) and Jamie Garland (145 lbs.) all ended the day with a 1-2 record. Ryan Brooks (138 lbs.) went 2-2 on the day and Travis Diggs (220 lbs.) 0-2.

The W&L Wrestling Team will turn their attention to the Northern Neck District Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. Joining the Eagles will be the following schools: Northumberland, Lancaster and Essex High Schools.
