Westmoreland County Public Schools will join festivities with visits to schools and a proclamation honoring their service to public school education this month during “School Board Appreciation Month,” when almost 850 school board members in Virginia will be honored. According to the Virginia School Board Association, the theme of this year’s celebration, “School Boards Speak Out For Public Schools,” reflects the combined commitment of school boards to lead and advocate for quality and accountable public schools that ensure all students achieve success.
This year’s board has a new member, Karen Jackson, District 1, who was elected in November. She joined the board at the January 28 meeting. At that meeting, Iris Lane, District 2, was selected to be the Chairman and Gernard Reed, At Large member, was reelected to the Vice-Chairman position. Other members include Coralynn Wise, District 3 and Dr. Daniel Wallace, District 4.
The time spent in board meetings represents a fraction of the hours school board members spend leading in their divisions. They also attend training seminars to keep abreast of the latest trends in educational leadership and are deeply involved in community activities.
The Westmoreland County School Board meets the fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. in the Gerald Roane Building at the School Board office. The meetings are open to the public and parents and students are encouraged to attend.
