Northern Neck to send wrestlers to Salem
Washington & Lee’s James Snider has qualified to compete in the state championships Feb. 15-16 in Salem.
Two wrestling teams from the Northern Neck cracked the top five in overall scores in the Region A Wrestling Championships held Feb. 10-11.
While the wrestlers from Northampton accumulated the most points of all teams with a final score of 210.5, the Lancaster Red Devils finished third overall with 168 points and the Washington and Lee Eagles wrestled their way into fourth with 162.
Northumberland ranked one position outside the top five with 110 team points, and Essex scored 88 total points to finish ninth overall.
In the individual championships, Northampton dominated the three lightweight classes, but W&L student James Snider captured the top spot for the 126-pound weight class, with Tyrell Jones from Essex finishing second.
But while Snider was Washington and Lee’s only individual victor, Lancaster wrestlers won three of the weight classes, a mark that was second only to Northampton’s four victories.
Brad Smith took home the 152-pound weight class for the Red Devils while Lancaster students Sam Friday and Shane Chambers finished first in the 160-pound and 182-pound weight classes respectively.
Casey Paglia, who won the 145-pound weight class for Northampton, was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the Region A Championships.
The top four wrestlers from each of the 14 weight classes advance to the Virginia High School League State Tournament. The fifth place wrestler from each category will serve as an alternate.
From the Northern Neck, the wrestlers to compete for the state championships are Lancaster County’s Brad Smith, Sam Friday, Thomas Hyde, Shane Chambers, Kai Antonio, Colton Hayden, and Sam Bouis, Washington and Lee’s Sergei Minor, Moses Oviedo, James Snider, Sam McGill and Jose Chipres and Northumberland County’s Billy Pipkin, Kevin Hanks, Aaron Curry, Jordan Chinn, Cody Jackson and Philip Harrison.
Wrestlers to proceed to the state tournament from Essex County consist of Kyle Acree, Clifton Bundy, Tyrell Jones, Edwin Mesa and Kevin Clarke.
Kenique Stewart of Lancaster County is the only listed alternate from the Northern Neck.
Wrestlers that qualify will advance to the Group A Virginia High School League State Championship at the Salem Civic Center Feb. 15-16.
