A week prior to the finale of the season, the Colonial Beach’s Boys Varsity Basketball Team faced the possibility of having to play an additional game. Instead, the team went on to win all of their last three games and capture the Northern Neck District regular season title for the first time since joining the district in the fall of 2009.
On Feb. 8, the Colonial Beach Boys Basketball Team captured its first Northern Neck District Regular Season title after defeating the Northumberland Indians 42-40. The Drifters are now the top seeded team in the Northern Neck District Tournament on Feb. 13.
“It feels good right now,” said Colonial Beach Head Coach Jonathan Parker. “I knew coming into the season it was going to be tough because Lancaster, Essex and Northumberland are always the top dogs…but when you go out and compete every night you just never know what will happen.”
Last season, Colonial Beach missed reaching the Northern Neck District Tournament after falling in the final regular season game to Washington & Lee after a buzzer beater. This Wednesday, they will be the top seed in the same tournament that they were ineligible to participate in a year ago. The team finished the regular season on a four game winning streak with an overall record of 16-6, 9-1 in the district with their only loss to the defending state 2A champion Lancaster Red Devils.
This past week, Colonial Beach’s Montie Gould recorded a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to help defeat Washington & Lee 52-50. W&L’s Trey Brown knocked down a game high 21 points.
Keane Foster chipped in with 14 points for Colonial Beach followed by Sidney Horton with 10, Paris Muse with six, Devonte Harris with three and Kamron Smith with one.
W&L’s CJ Harris scored 10 points followed by Jeremy Turner with eight and Millian Bullock with four.
Colonial Beach ended the head-to-head regular season defeating Essex for the second time, 44-42 on Feb. 6. Foster led the team with 12 points along with Essex’s Alonzo Tompkins and Keith Bundy each tying for a game high with 16.
Colonial Beach’s Shamar Shanks scored eight points followed by Muse with six, Ethan Harvin with five, Devonte Harris with four and Horton with two.
Essex’s Sterling Hammond had 10 rebounds to go along with five points followed by D.J. Ashlock with four and Alex Balderson with one.
And in the regular season ending, In the win to seal to the regular season district title, Gould recorded another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the 42-40 win over Northumberland.
Foster scored 10 points followed by Ethan Harvin with nine, Devonte Harris with five, Muse with four and Shamar Shanks with two.
Northumberland was led by Kyle Elmore with 12 points followed by Aaron Lewis with 11, Wesley Jackson with nine, Keith Bryant with six and Dorian Morris with two.
