Drifters end season in a nightmare

Ending the season as the regular season district champions was like a dream come true for the coach of the year Jonathan Parker. But when his Colonial Beach Drifters dropped their last two games, the year turned into a nightmare ending the year at 16-8.

Senior Paris Muse will be one of the six seniors to be leaving the boys team due to graduation.

“It was kind of disappointing how we did in the regular season and then in the last two games. We just didn’t execute and that’s the bottom line,” said Parker. “Those teams came to play and it really hurts that we’re not still playing.”

On Feb. 20, the Colonial Beach Varsity Boys Basketball Team ended their season in the quarterfinals falling to sixth seeded Middlesex, 61-54. Colonial Beach was the third seed in the region tournament.

Then a week before, the team fell in the opening round of the district tournament to soon-to-be district and Division 2 region tournament champion Northumberland. Colonial Beach was the top seed in the tournament.

What really hurts the team too is that have proven they could’ve won after dropping both teams twice during the regular season.

“I figured that we had a good enough team to make to regionals and farther than we have,” Parker said. “But I’ll take this season better than last year.”

Parker said coming into the season, it was the team’s goal of improving.

“I knew the offseason was going to be important for us to get in the gym and get better,” Parker said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew would be better than last year, but as the season went along, we just keep winning.”

What made the members of this year’s team so special, Parker said was their persistence.

“Most of our games were decided by two, to three, to five points, so we just hung in there this year,” Parker said.

Montie Gould and Keane Foster, members of the all district team, are expected to return next season for the Drifters.

However the team will lose six seniors including Paris Muse, Ethan Harvin, David Allison, Devonte Harris, Sidney Horton and Michael McGorda.

“I feel very good about next season,” Parker said. “I’m looking forward to next year.”
