Powell identified in fatal accident

A tragic accident took the life of a Colonial Beach man this past Tuesday.

According to Sgt. Thomas Molnar of the Virginia State Police, William G. Powell Sr., 78 of Colonial Beach, was pronounced dead following an investigation on the morning of Feb. 26.

Powell, who was driving, suffered a medical condition before he struck the garage of his home.

Molnar said that the accident caused a structure fire at the 1800 block of Pomana Road resulting in a rush of emergency service team to respond.

Powell was identified by the chief medical examiner’s office in Richmond. Molar said due to HIPPA regulations, he is unable to share what the medical condition was that caused the accident.

The home Powell crashed into completely burned after the vehicle connected with multiple flammable combustibles in the garage. No one was in the home at the time of the fire, Molnar said, adding that the grandchildren who resided there are currently with other relatives.

A second vehicle on the property was damaged due to the fire.

Molnar said the investigation is still on-going.

Colonial Beach and Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Departments, Dahlgren, Westmoreland and King George Emergency services responded to the scene that morning.
