Beach rejoices, county grieves in district opener
The Drifters opened the Northern Neck District Baseball schedule with a dramatic win over their county rivals last week. On April 9, in a close game to the finish, it was a walk off hit by Colonial Beach sophomore Kamron Smith to edge a 6-5 win over the Washington & Lee Eagles at Monroe Park.
Sophomore Nick Graves started the game for Colonial beach pitching four and a third innings giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out seven. Graves also smacked two singles and drove in one run.
“Of all the games I have coached here, this W&L win was one of the best fan friendly wins I can recall,” said Colonial Beach coach Steve Swope. “You could see the joy in everyone’s eyes and their emotions poured freely.”
Smith ended the game-reaching base five times on three bases on balls and two hits. He produced the tying run on a homer to right center field in the third inning, scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, before shutting out the Eagles in his third inning at the mound.
Sophomore Nick Graves started the game for Colonial beach pitching four and a third innings against ace Carrington Balderson, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out seven. Graves also smacked two singles and drove in one run.
“Dropping an eight-inning contest to cross-town rival Colonial Beach was devastating for the young group of Eagles,” said W&L coach Michael Clark.
Balderson struck out 13 through seven innings on Tuesday but that wasn’t enough for the young Eagles to take down the Drifters. Allowing only three hits on the day, the Eagles defense struggled with walks and errors and allowed Colonial Beach to plate six runs in total.
Offensively the Eagles struggled to pick up the big hit they needed with runners in scoring position. The team pushed across five runs but left 10 runners on base throughout the game.
Colonial Beach’s Sidney Horton added a single, a walk and scored a run; Devin Davis reached base three times and scored a run; Gavin Lutz and DezJohn Parker each contributed singles and teammate Josh Thomas walked and scored the game winning run.
