Montross students named champs

Coached by Joan Weldon (not pictured), the Junior Division from left to right: Cameron Ball, Cecelia MacNamara, Jenifer Broglin, and Maci Sydnor.

Students from Montross Middle School placed first overall and second for their Action Plan Presentation in the Virginia Future Problem Solvers State Bowl at Granby High School in Norfolk last week. The students participated as four-member teams in the Middle division and the Junior division of Group Issues Problem Solving (GIPS).
To compete, teams select issues from several global topics presented throughout the school year including Culture of Celebrity, Robotic Age, Megacities, and Ocean Soup. The State Bowl topic was Ocean Soup which is confetti-like plastic garbage floating in the world’s oceans.
The Action Plan is developed into a skit by the team the night before and presented on the morning of the final day of the State Bowl where it is judged for the first time.
The champions will next participate at the International Conference in Bloomington, Indiana.
