W&L Boys, Lady Indians extend their dominance

Northern Neck District soccer got into full-swing last week for both the girls and the boys.

On April 22, the Washington & Lee girls, with a penalty kick from Megan Daiger, tied Essex 1-1 at home.  The next night, W&L travelled to Lancaster and won 2-1.  The game was scoreless at halftime, but early in the second half Daiger was fouled inside the goalie box and converted the penalty kick for the first goal.

The Washington & Lee High Boys Varsity Soccer Team continues its dominance over the Northern Neck. Last week, the team defeated Lancaster and Essex. Pictured is W&L’s Hudson Hutt finding space on the field.

Soon after, Lancaster equalized on a goal from Lauren James.  Late in the second half, Daiger was again fouled inside the 18 and converted her second PK for the final score.  Lancaster, despite having three players out with major injuries and several out with illness, kept constant pressure on the Eagles, but big defensive plays from Maria Alvarez and 11 saves by Brittany Payne preserved the win for W&L.

The Northumberland girls Went to New Kent Monday and lost 5-0 and then later to St. Margaret’s falling 5-0.  The Lady Indians closed the week beating Lancaster 1-0 on an unassisted goal by Megan Baughan.

Shots on goal were taken by Bridgette McLaughlin with seven, Baughan with three, India Eguiguren with two, and Rosa Rivera with one. Nychelle Thompson had eight take aways, Alexandra Pitman with four, and Emily Sprague with three. Boarman had 13 saves in first half and Sydnee Setzer with eight in the second half.

In boys play, Northumberland led 1-0 early, on a goal by Tyler O’Bier in their matchup with Lancaster.  Lancaster equalized with a penalty kick by Brian Moody.  At the end of five overtime minutes, neither team was able to score and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Rappahannock shut out Northumberland 4-0 April 24.  Rappahannock got a goal from Michael Gaines and three goals and an assist from Aaron Rock.

That same night, Washington & Lee defeated Lancaster 6-2 on the strength of three goals from Juan Ochoa and a goal each from Pope Antunez, Jose Chipres, and crowd favorite Chum Pratt.  Brian Moody scored both goals late for Lancaster.

W&L continued its winning ways Friday night, getting goals from Hudson Hutt, Antunez, and Ochoa in a 3-0 win at Essex.  Big plays from goalie Ryan Taylor and a stout defensive unit led by Jay Jims, Lashoad Hopewell, and Wyatt Clift kept Essex off the scoreboard.
