Virginia American Water awarded grants to three volunteer fire departments in the Northern Neck. Colonial Beach, Callao and Fairfields Volunteer Fire Departments were given the $500 grants to advance fire protection and training.
The Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department plans to use its grant to help purchase a five-inch fire hose that will enable firefighters to better control fires in rural areas where they must draw water from a pond, river or swimming pool.
“We are pleased to provide these grants to the men and women who volunteer at the local fire departments in our Eastern District service area,” said Virginia American Water President William R. Walsh. “This year’s grantees proposed important projects that will enhance fire protection, safety or training in their communities. We look forward to continuing grant support for volunteer fire departments in the Eastern District on an annual basis.”
The Callao Volunteer Fire Department in Northumberland County will use its grant to fund procurement of training materials, including mannequins, video materials, training manuals and student handbooks. The Callao volunteer firefighters offer training to church groups, businesses and individuals on life-saving procedures and techniques.
The Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, also in Northumberland County, will use its grant to purchase a portable roadside sign for the display of fire safety messages and tips at its Reedville Station.
