A beloved event returns with Montross Market Days

Clouds and cool temperatures didn’t deter locals and visitors to the first Montross Market Days of the season last Saturday. Maybe that’s because Lois Allensworth brought the sunshine with her in bunches of fresh produce, bright hanging plants and her colorful van. Billy Rice filled the square with ducks and wild turkeys – or the sound of them, anyway. He demonstrated his handmade duck, goose and turkey calls and displayed his decoys. Friends of Westmoreland State Park, artist Nana Gail Lauer and many more made the first event a success with good food and friends. Market Days were a tradition some years ago and to many, the informal market was a “hometown tradition.” Now the Greater Montross Partnership for Revitalization has brought it back the first Saturday of each month May through September, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The next Market Days is June 1. Interested vendors can pick up an application at Town Hall, Carrot Cottage or the Westmoreland News in downtown Montross.
