Westmoreland bridge to be replaced beginning this year

In a project estimated to cost $3.2 million, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will replace the Route 205 (James Monroe Highway) bridge over Mattox Creek in Westmoreland County.
The existing bridge is structurally deficient, and consists of two 11-foot travel lanes and shoulders of varying widths, according to VDOT. The replacement bridge will have two 12-foot travel lanes, with two 10-foot shoulders.
Construction of the bridge is scheduled to begin in late 2013 and will continue through the spring 2014. A public hearing on the project, and public comment period, was held in July 2011.
The bridge will be replaced in phases. Temporary traffic signals will be installed at each end of the bridge, and traffic will take turns crossing the bridge in a single travel lane. Motorists may experience minor travel delays due to one-way traffic on the bridge.
