Postseason highs and lows for Northern Neck teams
Lady Drifters eliminated
The Virginia High School League Spring Jubilee ended for the Northern Neck’s Northumberland Softball in the state semifinals falling to Floyd County.
This news comes after three teams, including Colonial Beach Softball and
Colonial Beach’s Karley Inscoe and the Lady Drifters ended their season in the Group A Division 1 State Quarterfinals.
Rappahannock Softball and Baseball Teams, were eliminated in the first round of the Group A Championships. And in the state semifinals, the Rappahannock Boys & Girls Doubles Tennis Teams.
On May 28 in the region quarterfinals, Northumberland knocked off third seeded Windsor, 7-5 and later second seeded Nandua, 10-4.
Northumberland traveled to King William for the Region A Finals on May 31 only to leave with a 13-0 loss. However, Northumberland earned a spot in the Group A Division 2 State Softball Tournament after the first two wins.
Northumberland went to defeat Dan River in the opening round, 4-1, but was eliminated at Radford University by Floyd County, 13-4, in the state semifinals.
Group A Girls Tennis
Rappahannock’s Abby Gozka and Lori Gagnon, last year’s region doubles champs, defended their title on May 29 and sealed their spot in the Group A State Girls Doubles Tournament. The duo defeated Northampton at the Howard Mast Tennis Complex against the doubles team from Northampton (6-0, 6-1) and in the finals over Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (2-6, 6-4 and 6-1).
But on June 7, the duo fell to Region B Champion George Mason 2-0 (6-0, 6-2) in the state semifinals.
Group A Boys Tennis
Chris France and Brandon Wiseman won the Region A Doubles Championship on May 29 in the name of Rappahannock defeating Windsor in two sets (6-1, 6-3) at the Howard Mast Tennis Complex. This came after defeating Windsor’s Kyle Hollowell and Daniel Klausmeier.
However, Wiseman and France fell in the opening round of the Group A Boys Doubles Tennis Tournament at Radford University to Region B Champion Wilson Memorial’s Miles Harnard and Connor Spotts, 2-0 (6-1, 6-0).
Ball teams eliminated
On June 4, Rappahannock fell in the opening round to the visiting Region B runners-up Riverheads, 4-2, eliminating the Raiders from the Group A Division 1 State Baseball Tournament.
In other action with teams from the Northern Neck District and Group A Division 1 Softball Tournament, Region A Champ Rappahannock fell at home in 10 innings to Region B runners up Madison, 3-0; Region A runners-up Colonial Beach was sent home with a 22-1 lost by East Rockingham (Region B Champion). The losses put both teams out of contention for a state title.
Both teams would’ve had a chance to meet in the state finals on June 8 in Salem.
