Eagles shut out Devils
In Washington & Lee’s make-up game against Lancaster Monday night, the Eagles took a little while to shake off the weekend rust. Then the high-flying Eagles, after scoring once in the first quarter,
Treshaun Brown and the Washington & Lee improved to 1-0 in the district after 36-point shut out win over Lancaster on Monday.

W&L started their second possession of the game at the Lancaster 22. Two D.J. Weldon carries later, W&L was on the board for a 7-0 lead. After the defense held the Red Devils to three and out, W&L took over at their own 39. Treshaun Brown hit Jerret Sumiel for 21 yards. Weldon carried the load the next four plays getting the ball to the Lancaster 15. Four straight Brown runs culminated in another W&L score to start the second quarter.
On Lancaster’s next possession, the Eagles blocked Jack Kelly’s punt, and Ryan Taylor recovered at the Lancaster 37. Weldon scored from there on the next play, and W&L was suddenly up 21-0. After another Lancaster punt, W&L wasted no time covering 60 yards in three plays, capped by Marion Pollard’s 44 yard touchdown run.
On Lancaster’s next play, Ricky Gibson’s pass was intercepted by Bruce Smith. Brown kept the Eagles going with a 30-yard run and then scored on a 15-yard run two plays later. On the Eagles’ final possession of the half, Brown hit Sumiel for a 24-yard gain to midfield. Seven Milan Bullock carries later, W&L was at the Lancaster five. Alex Lane then kicked a 22-yard field goal as time expired, and the Eagles led 36-0 at halftime.
There was no scoring in the second half as W&L was content to run the clock. For the game, the Eagles amassed 385 yards rushing on 42 carries by six different ball carriers. Their smothering, Hard-Hat-Gang defense held the Red Devils to just 86 yards total offense. W&L hosts Northumberland this Friday, while Lancaster travels to Rappahannock. Games kick-off at 7 p.m.
