A wish on a local superintendent’s part came true weeks ago. After a complaint was made to the direction of Colonial Beach’s Athletic Department, Superintendent Kathleen Beane states the case has been
closed after a successful review.
“I’m very pleased with the cooperation of the office of civil rights and their desire to work with us to get these issues remedied,” Beane said. “They have been very supportive, understood our financial constraint and our size.”
In July, Beane and her staff confirmed that there was an investigation underway following a complaint being issued to the Department of Education’s Civil Rights office alleging discrimination between the male and female athletes.
According to spokesperson Jim Bradshaw, of the U.S. Department of Education, the complainant alleged that the school division discriminated against the high school female athletes by failing to provide them with specific facilities that the male athletes have. He added that another area of concern mentioned in the complaint was regarding the condition of locker rooms, practice fields and competitive fields.
