Giving thanks for life, health and support systems
During the holiday season this year, people are thankful for many things. Joining a group of grateful breast cancer survivors, Cathy Sanford of Montross is thankful for life, good health and strong support systems.
Sanford, like many others in our community, has waged a battle with cancer.
Sanford, like many others in our community, has waged a battle with cancer. With another year coming to its end, Sanford is thankful she was able to beat it.
Sanford was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but spent time in Westmoreland as all of her mother’s relatives lived here. She moved to Westmoreland in 2000, worked at Montross Middle School for three years and then moved to Washington and Lee High School where she still works as secretary.
Sanford has a family history of cancer, both breast and other forms, so from a young age she took the initiative to get herself checked frequently. At a young age, Sanford had undergone two biopsies. There was concern that she could have breast cancer, but fortunately the lumps were benign. Following these occurrences, Sanford continued to see a breast specialist every six months.
