Virginia is for Lovers Day
At the November meeting of the Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors, a resolution was passed naming this Friday, Dec. 6 as Virginia is for Lovers Day. The resolution stated that the Virginia is for Lovers tourism slogan was created in 1969 as a campaign to market the many assets of Virginia.

It also noted that the Virginia Tourism Corporation was established in the General Assembly in 1999 to stimulate tourism and film industries in the Commonwealth. In 2012, the travel industry was the fifth largest private employer in Virginia, generating $21.2 billion in visitor spending, resulting in 210,000 jobs.
Tourism in Westmoreland County generated $56.7 million in visitor spending and contributed $4.1 million in state and local taxes. In the resolution, the board commended the Virginia Tourism Corporation for working in partnership with Westmoreland County and the Northern Neck Tourism Commission to promote the region as a premier travel destination and wanted to call this special observance to the attention of all citizens.
