Baylor

Joyce Ann Canada Baylor passed away November 24, 2013. She was born August 16, 1950 to Lucy Canada.

She was a faithful member of New Zion Baptist Church, serving as Trustee, Assistant Church Clerk and a member of the pulpit committee.

She was a 1968 graduate of Richmond County High School and continued her education at RCC, graduating with a degree in Microcomputer Applications.

She worked at Levi Strauss and Company for 31 years, continued her career at Wal-Mart and operated her own business, Rejoyce Religious Supplies, with her brother, Frank.

Surviving are her husband of 37 years, Warner Baylor; daughter, Chiquita Baylor; brother, Deacon Frank Canada (Deborah); sister, Norma Jean Shelton (Wallace); aunt, Louise Canada; sister-in-law, Crystal Satchell (Marwin); brother-in-law, Stanley Baylor, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bruington.

Bowman

Cecil Paul Bowman, 83, of Montross died Thursday, December 12, 2013. Cecil was the husband of the late Edith L. Bowman, a member of Currioman Baptist Church, a member of Montross Moose Lodge # 2333 and a retired security guard for Stratford Harbour Association.

He is survived by his sons, Keith Bowman (Judy) of Montross, Paul Bowman (Tonya) of Lenoir, NC and Donald Bowman (Gail) of Lenoir, NC.; one brother, George Marshall Bowman Jr. of North Carolina; four sisters, Roxie Hamlet, Florence Balderson and Reba Alverson (Bill) all of Montross and Betty Sue Kerby of Patterson, NC. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Buddy Lee Bowman; three brothers, Boyd Bowman, Eugene Bowman and George Bowman and two sisters, Jeannette Pipes and Cedren Robbins.

A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 16 at Currioman Baptist Church, Zacata. Rev. David McIntire officiated.

Brooks

Carol Ann Brooks, 59, of Norwich, Conn., formerly of Hague went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 11, 2013.

She was predeceased by her parents, Alice Fallin Brooks and Leroy Chester Brooks, and aunt and uncle, Hannah and Carrington Pinkard.

She is survived by her brother, Larry Brooks of Montross and Gail Marshall (Reed) of Hague, other family members and her friends at Reliance House in Connecticut. Services will be private.

Brown

James H. Brown passed away November 28, 2013. He was born September 3, 1936 to Flora and Collier Brown Sr. James attended Richmond County Schools.  He was a member and Trustee of Second Baptist Church and a member of both the Men’s Chorus and Senior Choir.

On Feb. 21, 1959, James was united in Holy matrimony to Elsie Epps Brown.

He worked on Pemberton’s Dairy Farm and later became an Assistant Plant operator Wood Preservers, Inc.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Elsie Epps Brown; three children, Corey Brown (Leslie), Jacqueline Washington (Duane) and Bernadette LeVere (Darryl); eight grandchildren, Courtney, Brittney and Chelsea Brown, Dimitri and Desmond Washington and Destiny, Christopher and Miles LeVere; great-grandchild, Damian Washington; his brothers and sisters, Collier Brown Jr., George Brown (Jean), Thomas Brown, Robert Matthews (Marjorie), Charlie Brown (Linda), Leatrice Scott, Florence Baptist, Shirley Johnson (Jesse) and Doris Miller, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at Second Baptist Church.

Interment services were held at the church cemetery.

 Chatham

A. Stanley Chatham, 83, died Friday, December 13, 2013. “He Belonged to the Lord.” He was a retired Marine Patrol Officer for VMRC, a member of Westmoreland Lodge 212 AF&AM, a retired waterman and carpenter.

He is survived by his wife, Florence H. Chatham; one son, Todd Stanley Chatham of Warsaw; one daughter, Connie Chatham Reynolds (Terry) of Glen Allen; three sisters, Ruby Clark of Warsaw, Dorothy Zeller of Farnham and Bernice Conley of Tappahannock; and three grandchildren, Amber, Kayla and Jonathan Chatham.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, at the Montross Chapel of the Welch Funeral Home. Brother Gordon McDonald and Pastor Ken Overby officiating. Miles

Samuel Edward Miles passed away November 9, 2013. He was born January 28, 1955 to Samuel and Agnes Frances Goldman Miles.

Samuel attended school in Middlesex County, Rappahannock Community College Glenns Campus and Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton.

After retiring from the U.S Army, Samuel worked in Washington, DC at the Pentagon and served as an Administrative Assistant at Walter Reed Hospital and the Navy Medical Center in Maryland.

Preceded in death by his parents, he is survived by his siblings: Alice A. Miles of Irvington and her daughter, Licia Miles Dandridge of Lancaster; George W. Miles (Sharon) of Lackey, Va., Milton D. Miles of Saluda and Barbara A. Miles of Woodbridge; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and -nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held November 16, 2013. Interment services were held at the church.

Packett

Frances Daiger Packett, 88, of Warsaw, passed away Saturday, December 14, 2013. Mrs. Packett was the daughter of the late William and Georgia Daiger, the widow of Robert Packett Sr., a retired cashier at Family Dollar and a member of Edgewater United Methodist Church.

Survivors are her son, Robert “Bobby” Packett Jr.; daughters, Nancy Clark (Frankie) and Georgia Packett; sisters, Virginia Wood and Mary Jane Knight; and grandchildren, Robbie Daiger Packett and Nicholas Murray. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, William, Irving, Eldred and Ogle Daiger and granddaughter, Elisa Thomas.

The family would like to especially thank Riverside Tappahannock Hospice, The Orchard and a special thank you to Gladys Clark.

Postell 

Margaret Elizabeth “Liz” “Momma Liz” Thompson Postell passed away on Nov. 2, 2013. She was born May 3, 1925 to James Wesley Thompson and Susie Rebecca Thompson in Lottsburg.

She was a member of Zion Lottsburg Baptist Church where she served on the Zion Missionary Society for many years. She attended Julius Rosenwald High School. Liz left for Washington, DC in search of opportunity and worked as a waitress, performed neo-natal care at Freedman’s Hospital, and served as a nurses’ assistant at Walter Reed Hospital, a position she held until retirement.

In Washington, Liz met and married Louis Postell. Liz was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters and five brothers.

Liz is survived by her children, Anthony Falls (Judith) and LaWanda Postell; sisters, Doris Catherine Betts, Lessie Darnell Smith, and Florence Ilva Connor; grandchildren, Justin Falls and Lauren Falls, a great-grandchild, Maggie Campbell-Falls; devoted friends, Shirley Stewart and Sandra Usual, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held November 9 at Macedonia Baptist Church. Interment services were held at the Thompson Family Cemetery, Lottsburg.

Sutton

Elvris Sylvester “Big Daddy” Sutton passed away November 17, 2013. He was born January 19, 1967 to Deloris and Earl Sutton.

Elvris received his education in Northumberland County and was employed at Franklin Inn and Tides Inn for many years.

He had a dear relationship with his fiancé, Lakisha Williams. He also continued his friendship with the mother of his children, Victoria Ball.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Olethia and Millard Levern Bromley and Thomas Johnson; three cousins, Terrell Bromley, Chris Sutton, and Saprina Bromley.

Surviving are his mother, Deloris; father, Earl Sr.; children, Kesha, Shaunessy and Donte; fiancé, Lakisha; brothers, Earl Jr. (Val) and Maurice (Melanie) and Jason Sanford; sisters, Karen (Clovies), and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held November 21 at First Baptist Church, Heathsville.

Interment services were held at the church cemetery.

Veney

Mary Elizabeth “Baby Sis” Veney passed away Decemer 1, 2013. She was born October 21, 1962 to Frances Brooks Veney and James Veney. She attended Northumberland County Schools and worked as a housekeeper for many years.

She was preceded in death by her father, a brother, Oneal Veney; sister, Tammy Veney and nephew, Jerell Veney.

Surviving are her mother, Frances Veney; four sons, James, Tyrone, Maurice and Dustin Veney; three daughters, Lakeisha Veney, Moniqueia Veney and Sandra Veney; three sisters, Martha Veney, Brenda Conaway and Linda Veney; three brothers, Cleveland, Micheal and Lamanuel Veney; two grandsons, Jae’Quan Veney and Keyontae Veney, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, December 6 at the Church of Nazarene. Rev. Walker Wilson of Morning Star Baptist Church, Eulogist. Interment services were held at Lively Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.
