Beauchamp

Helen Sanford Beauchamp, 98, of Warsaw, passed away on Friday, January 3, 2014. Mrs. Beauchamp was the widow of Wilton Irving Beauchamp and a member of Saint John’s Episcopal Church. After over 50 years of service, she retired from the Northern Neck News as a proof reader. Mrs. Beauchamp saw many changes during her life; one of the most memorable was attending the inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Survivors are her grandsons, Joshua Beauchamp (Katja) and Travis Beauchamp (Dimitry); her great-grandchildren, Nora, Wilton, and Eleanor and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Wilton Irving Beauchamp, Jr.; two brothers, Randolph Sanford and Goodwyn Sanford; and her sister, Gladys Sanford.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2014 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Reverend Michael Malone officiated. Pallbearers were Curtis Packett, Marion James Packett, Tim Sanford, and Buster Sanford. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Biemeck

E. Jonell Biemeck, 67, of Colonial Beach passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Walter Reed National Medical Center, Bethesda, Md. after a long and courageous battle with diabetes.  She was born on April 22, 1946 in Forester, Arkansas, and was the daughter of Gerald and Loretta Nelson. She married Colonel (Ret) John F. Biemeck in 1970 and moved to Virginia in 1971. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her beloved husband John F. Biemeck; her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Goodwin and husband Wade; four grandchildren; sisters, Nina Nadine Watson, Alta Ilene Robinson, Eva Sue Hanson, and brother Jerry D. Nelson, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Her wake will be held on Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home, 1621 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, Va. 22401 followed by a memorial service at 12:01 p.m. and an immediate Celebration of her life for her friends and family members and guests.  Internment will be in the Gettysburg National Military Cemetery (old section – near the Lincoln Speech Memorial), Gettysburg, Pa. at a later date. Flemer

Gardner

Paul Brian Gardner, 56, of Colonial Beach passed away Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 at Mary Washington Hospital.

Born in New York, Paul was the maintenance manager at the Potomac Renaissance Condominiums. He had a love for music, life and horse racing.

Survivors include his wife, Callie M. Gardner; three children, Paul, Jonathan and Melissa; three stepchildren, Schuyler, Cameron and Kaleb; parents, Frank and Alice Gardner; three sisters, Lydia, April and Amy.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sat. Jan. 11 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach with the Rev. Ron Okrasinski officiating. Burial will be private.

King

Leon H. King, 75, of Colonial Beach passed away on Jan. 4, 2014, after fighting a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He retired from General Electric, and later retired from J.E. Rice.

Leon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol; three children, Donna VanNess Speiser, Dori Farrell (Benny), and Wade King (Kim); eight grandchildren, JW VanNess (Cindy), Ashley Robinson (Jon), Holly Speiser, Hallie K. Farrell, Dylan Speiser, Tabitha King, Lauren Heislup Balderson (JB), and Stewart Heislup, and six great-grandchildren. His sister, Beverley Minor, and his extended Maryland family who loved him like a brother also survive him.

He loved to do projects with his family from building the back garage to working on his truck. Leon was a perfectionist; therefore objects were always in pristine condition. Leon adored his pets; he especially loved when his bird sat on his shoulder. After a long day of being on the water fishing and crabbing, he was happy to come home and cook his catch for a get together.

A private celebration of life was held.

Oliff

Calvin Ray Oliff, 57, of Colonial Beach passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, in Fredericksburg.

Ray was a floor layer. He was a member of Maranatha Baptist Bible Church, Colonial Beach.

Survivors include Joan; grandson, Jay; a brother; four sisters; four nieces, and eight nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Loretta Heil, and parents Herman and Edna Mae Oliff.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 21, at Maranatha Baptist Bible Church, Colonial Beach, with the service beginning at noon officiated by the Rev. James Johnson. Burial followed in Historyland Memorial Park, King George. A reception followed the services at the church.

chant Smith Robins, 86, died peacefully on Dec. 27, 2013 at the Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. Born in Yonkers, New York, she was the daughter of the late Frank Seeley Smith, Sr., and Edith Russell Seymour. She is survived by sons Dr. William H. Robins and wife Cathleen of Cambridge, Md., and David D. Robins and wife Renee of Oceanside, Calif.; six grandchildren, and several great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband William Hamilton Robins, III, and a son Roy Marchant Robins as well as a brother and two sisters. Edythe was an accomplished artist and musician. She trained to be a concert pianist and enjoyed classical music as well as jazz. She was a church organist through 2011. She loved the Washington Redskins. Edythe had been a long time resident of Colonial Beach for more than 40 years

Smith

Kathleen Peed Smith, 97, of Winston Salem, NC, widow of Robert Jenner Smith, passed away on December 29, 2013.  She was a secretary in the U. S. Congress, a member of the National Orchid Society and Ephesus Christian Church.   She is survived by her daughter, Nadine Smith Parker of Kinston, NC; grandchildren, Tracy Ann Baker of Burbank, CA and Kathleen E. Shoaf (Chad) of Lexington, NC and great-grandchildren, Trey Mayfield, Eric Mayfield, B. J. Mayfield, Brandon Mayfield, Allyson Smith, Wyatt Shoaf, Gracie Shoaf and William James Mayfield, and several great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at Ephesus Christian Church, Foneswood with Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Zaranski

Frank Bernard “Lefty” Zaranski, 88, of Ellicott City, Maryland, formerly of Montross, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013.  He was the widower of Mildred E. Zaranski, a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, retired from Western Maryland Railroad and a World War II Navy Veteran.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah E. Grob of Baltimore, MD, and Donna J. Tokosh and husband Rich of Ellicott City, MD; six grandchildren, Laura Jarrett, Chris Johnson, Scott Grob, Mallory Grob, Chad Grob and Blaine Grob; and four great-grandchildren, Hunter Johnson, Hayden Johnson, Dylan Jarrett and Nicholas Jarrett.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel with Pastor V. Wade Wilkins officiating.  Interment was in Historyland Memorial Park Cemetery, King George.  Pallbearers were Rick Tokosh, Chris Johnson, Mike Jarrett, Kevin Jenkins, Gene Jenkins and Scott Grob.
