National Volunteer Week was April 6-12 and dedicated volunteers in our community, like Mary Dixon from the Three Rivers Health District, were recognized and celebrated for their outstanding service. Each year, members of the Medical Reserve Corps are recognized for their hard work. Winners of the 2014 Division of the Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps (DCVMRC) were recently announced. The DCVMRC said these awards are their way “to formally acknowledge those who consistently go above and beyond to further the MRC mission to engage volunteers to strengthen public health, emergency response and community resiliency.”

Mary Dixon was awarded for her volunteer efforts.

Mary Dixon was awarded for her volunteer efforts.

According to the DCVMRC, Dixon volunteered for the third consecutive year in 2013 to assist the Three Rivers Health District public health educator with the Too Good for Drugs program, conducted in four counties of the Health District. The program is funded by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and offers 10 weekly sessions to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade children. The students receive information about the harm of using tobacco products and other drugs. The children participate in many structured activities to learn about decision-making and how to handle peer pressure. Dixon accompanies the public health educator to each program and helps encourage them to participate. She has been an important part of each session, helping the children gain confidence in their ability to make decisions for themselves.
