The road to Oz
It is a wonderful thing when someone shines so bright that the community is given the opportunity to help them reach their dreams. It is even more wonderful when the community takes that opportunity and makes a dream a reality.
Kathryn Beddoo has been asked to represent Virginia in two international race competitions in Australia.
This is most certainly the case for Washington and Lee High School Junior, Kathryn Beddoo. Beddoo has been asked to represent the state of Virginia in two international race competitions in Australia this summer.
To get selected for these races sponsored by Down Under Sports, you must be personally invited. Invitations are given based on standings and successes in running.
Beddoo said she has been asked to participate for the past three years, but that this was the first year that she and her father felt she was able to go. She said she thinks it was right to wait and go when she was older and had to work for it. “I like it because I’ve had to work for it and I realize it is not easy.”
Not only has she had to work at being a superb runner, but she has also had to work to help fund her way there.
She explained that she has gone around the community, told them what she was doing and was pleased to find they really care. She laughed while commenting that she didn’t realize how many people actually read the local sports paper, but that apparently they do because many knew who she was. “I’m known as ‘that runner.’”
