Colonial Beach’s Upward Soccer celebrates its first season

Colonial Beach’s Upward Soccer league wrapped up its first season with a picnic and award ceremony at New Life Ministries on Saturday. The 10-week-long season was the first of what league director John Kramer hopes will be many.upwards

“[For] the first year, I think it went very well,” Kramer said. “We achieved our goals of just creating a fun, positive environment for the kids.”

Jessica Welch, of Colonial Beach, had two children participate in the league.

“I loved it. I think they did a great job. It kept [my kids] busy, me busy, and I think they really enjoyed it. I hope they do it again next year,” Welch said.

In the league’s first season, a total of 112 players from the area in grades K-6 participated. The children were divided into 16 teams according to grade levels. In all, 72 games took place over eight Saturdays from 9-12 a.m.  Team practices were held one day a week and volunteers from local churches did all the coaching.

Next year, Kramer hopes to expand the league.

“I think that we will [grow to] at least 150 kids,” he said. Plans are to extend the grade limit next year to grade eight.
