After some delay, on May 29 the Westmoreland County School Board approved the resignation of Washington and Lee High School Principal Andrea Roane. Roane1

News of her resignation became known at the last school board meeting on May 19 when the revised agenda provided at the meeting included a resignation item. Following the open session of that meeting, the board went back in to closed session, but were unable to come to a decision and recessed the matter until May 29. Superintendent Rebecca Lowry stated that the delay for this decision gave the school board time to review additional information.

Lowry explained that public school divisions in Virginia require all personnel actions, such as hires, terminations, resignations, retirements, extensive leaves of absence, etc. to be approved by the school board.

The vote to approve the resignation was unanimous and her resignation is effective June 30, 2014.

At the close of the meeting on May 29, board Chairman Iris Lane gave the following statement: “This is not a win-win situation.  We spent numerous hours deliberating, collecting data, reviewing evidence, and listening to the community to do the best that we can as a Board.  This action is the will of the Board.  Change can be painful, but the intended outcome is growth.  Again, this was not a rash decision, the Board carefully considered the moral, legal, ethical, and, yes, human implications of this very difficult decision.  We are committed to providing the best education possible to all students in our school system.”

Lowry stated that Ms. Roane will not be employed anywhere else in the division.
