Beach volleyball team opens doors for clinic

Registration is set to begin for the 2013 Drifters Youth Volleyball Camp running from July 15-19 at Colonial Beach High School’s Drifter Dome. Each day will begin at 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. for students in grades 6-9, and resume for students in Pre-K-5 from 12-3 p.m. The cost is $30 if you pre-register by July 5 and $40 on the first day of camp.   • RCC recruits for new basketball and soccer teams

    In the coming academic year, Rappahannock Community College hopes to start men’s and women’s sports teams in basketball (Fall 2013) and soccer (Spring 2014). Dean Taylor, RCC’s student activities coordinator, has planned meetings to answer questions, measure student interest, and gauge community support for these teams on June 17 (Room 172, Glenns Campus) and June 18 (Warsaw Campus lecture hall).     The Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School Education Foundation is sponsoring a golf tournament on Friday, June 28, at Hobbs Hole Golf Course in Tappahannock, in honor of retired faculty member Randy Brown.     RCC baseball has seen some exciting moments.

    Suspending the baseball program was a tough decision for Rappahannock Community College’s president, Elizabeth “Sissy” Crowther. Nevertheless, Dr. Crowther, an ardent baseball fan and a strong supporter of the RCC team, says, “We cannot advance the sport of baseball at the college unless we can do a first-rate job with the activity.” Recruiting players and providing support for them—such as housing and transportation—has proved exceptionally difficult in recent years. “Time

    The “Big Croaker” winners of 2012 took home $4,000 in prizes. At the final weigh-in at June Parker Marina, contestants anxiously awaits the arrival of the big croaker entries from Dock Street ramp and from Garrett’s Marina locations and watch the results being tabulated on the leader board.

    Kenzie Cox, of the JV Softball Team, and David Wang, of the JV Baseball Team, were named Athletes for the Month for April. According to the Colonial Beach Athletics Department, these student/athletes are recognized for their performance, commitment, work ethic, leadership, sportsmanship and putting the team above themselves.
