2005 Inductees

James Ashburn

Softball

Starting at age 15, Ashburn amassed unbelievable records while playing for the legendary Texacos, pitching three no-hitters including a perfect game. He was equally as good at the plate, winning the batting title five times and was named MVP twice. His lifetime average was .491. He also played for numerous other local groups and helped form and coach several fast and slow pitch teams. He served as president of the Lancaster County Youth League and coached several youth teams. After his playing days, he organized an umpire association and officiated high school games in the Tidewater and Northern Neck Districts.

 

 

Prescilla Doeppe

Baseball

Doeppe was the first lady high school Athletic Director in the Northern Neck and one of the first in the state. Doeppe coached for 20 years at Northumberland High School winning three district titles, two regional crowns and participated in the state tourney twice. She was District Coach of the Year in 1979-1980 and 1981-1982. She also coached softball and track and organized volleyball as a winter sport for girls in the Northern Neck District, and the officials to work the games. She served on the Virginia High School League Sportsmanship Committee. She was involved in the NHS athletics for 25 years.

 

 

Jim Thorne

If you haven’t made it out to your favorite high school game since the 1970′s chances are you could hear it on WNNT with Jim Thorne calling the play-by-play. Over his career of broadcasting Northern Neck District football, basketball, softball and baseball games, not only did he broadcast hundreds of local games, over 600 in all, but he also traveled with the local teams at tournament time to bring the action back home to those who couldn’t make some of the long trips, including regional and state tournament action. Thorne has traveled with local teams from Virginia’s Eastern Shore to the coal fields in the southwest tip of the state, and nearly everywhere in between. From packed gymnasiums to cold and rainy football fields Thorne has been there to bring the action of Northern Neck teams into the living rooms and cars of thousands of sports fans.
