No. 5 Colonial Beach tops No. 4 Surry County, 22-6; rolls into Essex next week

Colonial Beach made a long but fruitful journey Friday night.  Quarterback Nick Graves rushed for two short-yardage touchdowns, and Andrai Turner completed a 15-yard halfback pass to Mike Mothershead as fifth-seeded Colonial Beach bumped off fourth-seeded Surry, 22-6.     The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity football team held off Surry County to take the second playoff round, 22-6. Nick Graves led the Drifters in touchdowns with two rushing scores. Surry’s lone score came in the second quarter, but the PAT was no good. Colonial Beach will face Essex in the next round.   • Washington and Lee cross country boys team finishes sixth in Virginia High School League State Championship

    The Washington & Lee Cross Country boys team and individual girls runners

    The Washington and Lee Running Eagles closed their 2014 cross country season at the VHSL State Championship.  The meet was held at Great Meadows Park just north of Warrenton.  The venue is a beautiful Virginia foothill location, but the day was blustery and cold.     The Washington & Lee varsity football team put two tough losses behind them when they easily handled the visiting Charles City squad, 69-34. Dexter Thomas and Kidanny DeJesus led the Eagles in touchdowns with two apiece as eight different W&L players scored in the matchup. The Eagles put up three touchdowns following a 49-0 first half. Both teams exploded with scoring in the final quarter with Charles City amassing 34 points

    Colonial Beach ran all over the visiting Lancaster Red Devils on Friday night as the Drifters rolled up 562 rushing yards and three players scored two touchdowns apiece. Nicholas Graves, DezJohn Parker and Cameron Headley each had two touchdowns and each ran for at least 125 yards.   • Washington and Lee Grad gets head baseball coaching job at Chancellor High School

    Chancellor has moved quickly to fill two head coaching vacancies, pending approval by the Spotsylvania County School Board. Chargers athletic director Rod Crooks said earlier this week that Mike Hundley has been hired to replace J.P. Gibbons as Chancellor’s baseball coach.
