Around the Northern Neck: Oct. 9-Oct. 15

Oct. 9

Volleyball: Washington & Lee 3 at Colonial Beach 0—25-22, 25-15, 25-21. Colonial Beach’s Rachel Allison and McKenzie Conway tied each with three kills, followed by Billie Gould and Allison tied each with three aces, Conway with five assists, Gould with four digs and Conway with 13 saves. Washington & Lee’s Victoria Minor led the team with five kills, followed by Haley Balderson with six aces, Tori Swann with a block, Amanda Grimm and Balderson tied each with four assists, Tamara Tate had 10 digs and five saves.


Volleyball: Essex 0 at Rappahannock 3—25-14, 25-21 and 25-20. Rappahannock’s Katelin Hamilton and Brandi Mulvena both were perfect from servicing. Mulvena had an ace, 10 kills and two saves, and Hamilton had an ace and three saves. Carlie Clark had three aces, 12 assists, two kills, two saves and two blocks; Kelsey Berhalter had an ace to go along with six kills; and Hallie Berger had four aces, four kills, 10 assists and two saves.


Volleyball: Lancaster 2 at Northumberland 3—23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 21-25 and 8-15. Lancaster’s Skylar Kellum led the team with 15 kills, followed by Lori Smith had five aces and 18 assists, July Traylor and Carli Hanback tied each with two blocks, Traylor also had 10 digs and 22 saves.

Golf: The golf season ended with one team and five qualifiers from the Northern Neck District competing in the Virginia High School League Group A Golf Championship.

On Oct. 9, the two-day tournament ended with Essex placing seventh behind state champion William Monroe. The champs scored 491 and Essex had 518.

Individually, Rappahannock’s Dylan Dunn had the lowest score among golfers from the Northern Neck District and Region A with 124 in 19th place out of 72.

He was followed by the following individual’s: Lancaster’s Colton Hayden placed 24th with 126, Essex’s Ryan Baughan and Larkin Gross tied for 26th with 127, Lancaster’s Alex Nelson placed 34th with 130, Essex’s Patrick Francis placed 38th with 132, Carter Mogran placed 41st with 133 and Daniel Clarke placed 47th with 137, Northumberland’s Matthew Harris placed 49th with 139, Rappahannock’s Chance Herbert placed 64th with 149 and Essex’s Nick Wind placed 68th with 151.

Colonial Beach’s Rachel Allison led the team with five kills, McKenzie Conway with three aces, Allison and Conway each tied with a block, Brooke Payne and Conway tied each with two assists, Kora Herrod with two digs, and Allison with seven saves. Lancaster’s Skylar Kellum led the team with eight kills, followed by Brooke Hudnall with six aces and six saves, Carli Hanibac had a block and 10 assists, and Brittany Jones had two digs.


Volleyball: Washington & Lee 2 at Essex 3—16-25, 17-25, 26-24, 25-22, 10-15. W&L’s Alexa Weeks led the team with eight kills and five blocks, followed by Haley Balderson with four aces, Amanda Grimm with 11 assists, and Zoe Davis with nine digs and 17 saves.

The week of October 15-19 is Homecoming Week at Rappahannock High School! To cap off the week’s festivities there will be a Pregame Barbecue from 6-8 pm on Friday, October 19th before the Raiders take on Washington and Lee High School in their homecoming football game.  The Pregame Barbecue will feature a plate of smoked pulled pork, cole slaw, baked beans, and a roll for only $7 a person and will take place in the behind the press box of the football stadium.   Raider apparel will also be available for sale during the game.


Northern Neck Wrestling Club will be holding open enrollment for regular season on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the month of October.  Enrollment will be held at the Club located on Dodlyt Road from 7:30-8:30 p.m.  Regular season be run from November through March and is open for grades 1st through 8th.  For more information, please call Steven Hanks at 804-370-2191 or follow us on Facebook.


The Virginia High School League Executive Committee approved emergency legislation by a 23-3 vote to immediately move to a six-classification group structure effective with the 2013-14 school year. Currently the league has a three-classification group.


Booster Club: The Northumberland High School Athletic Booster Club is currently accepting applications for membership for the 2012-2013 season. This year the Boosters are offering 10 different membership options, in hopes to accommodate a wide range of students, parents and community members. All those interested in joining or renewing their membership for the 2011-2012 season should contact Michael Stevenson (mstevenson1@nucps.net) at Northumberland High School.
