The Colonial Beach Drifters varsity basketball team hosted and defeated the Northampton Yellowjackets in overtime on Wednesday, January 16. The game started slowly with a few turnovers and some shots that clanked off the rim. The Yellowjackets were first on the scoreboard (0-2) with 5:44 to go in the first period. The Drifters hit one free throw to make it (1-2) a few seconds later; they tied the game (8-8) with 3:10 to go. The home team took their first lead (10-8) but the visitors tied it and the teams went back and forth and it was (14-15) at the end of the quarter. The game went the same way to start the second quarter until the Drifters went up by five (26-21) at the 4:37 mark. Some foul trouble and turnovers let the Yellowjackets take back the lead (26-27) with only forty seconds gone off the clock. The home team held a one-point advantage (32-31) at the half. Aneis Lyons scored 10 of his game high 33 points in the second. He (Aneis) said, “I felt the team wasn’t playing our best ball, so I did what I could to keep us in the game.” The break did not change how some of the starters were playing so they were taken out. “I just had a gut feeling that it wasn’t their night” said Head Coach Keith Dickerson. He continued, “Some nights are going to be like this, so I told them just relax and keep playing.” The Drifters were down (42-44) at the end of the third. They fell behind by five (44-49) with 6:29 to play. Mason Delane hit back to back three pointers to get them back into the game and they went up (54-51) with 3:38 to go. A turnover and three-point play with 34 seconds left gave the Yellowjackets a (58-60) lead. A free-throw by each team (59-61). Corvion Davis went to the line to shoot two free-throws with 7.9 seconds to play; he hit both and tie the game (61-61) and send it to overtime.
