Colonial Beach School Board honors Westmoreland News correspondent

Correspondent Suzy Pietras-Smith was named to the Virginia School Board Association Media Honor Roll for 2017. Dr. Kevin Newman, Superintendent of Schools, presented her with the award.

Colonial Beach School Board honored Westmoreland News correspondent Suzy Pietras-Smith for her coverage of the school system. The school board placed Pietras-Smith on the Virginia School Board Association Media Honor Roll for 2017.
The proclamation presented to Pietras-Smith states, in part, “The Colonial Beach School Board places Suzy Smith on the statewide VSBA Media Honor Roll, calling attention to the ongoing responsible and exemplary nature of reporting on this community’s public schools.”
VSBA lists the criteria for all media who are placed on this honor roll, whether print, radio, or television as:
1. Makes the effort to get to know the superintendent and board chairman.
2. Understands the division’s mission and goals.
3. Reports school news in a manner that is fair, accurate, and balanced.
4. Gives a high-profile position to good news about schools.
5. Regularly visits the schools, attends board meetings, etc.
6. Maintains a policy of “no surprises” by sharing information with school representatives.
Pietras-Smith is a regular visitor to Colonial Beach Public Schools and attends all School Board meetings throughout the year. She has gotten to know many of the students in the school from attending everything from concerts to helping at Santa’s Secret Shop to sporting events.
Pietras-Smith has been a correspondent with the Westmoreland News since 2011. She is most often seen riding her mobility scooter with her camera strapped to her neck at one town event or another.
