Student fees for the upcoming year, including several increases, were approved by the Colonial Beach School Board last week. The board also discussed whether to pass on the increased cost of health insurance to school employees.
Fees for Elementary include: Grades 2-5, Science Lab $5, K-5 Art Lab $5 per student. High School fees include lab fees of $10 per student, per class for Art, Business and Science, $3 per locker for student hall and locker room, $250 for behind the wheel driver’s education training and parking permits increased from $5 per year to $5 per month for a total of $40 per year.
All students who are dual enrolled at Rapphannock Community College(RCC) are also now responsible for the course costs. Each course averages around $300 with twelve high school students attending RCC for the 2013-2014 school term. The change was announced last spring in an effort to defray increased costs after federal funding to the school system was decreased nearly $900,000.
The cost of insurance will be increasing between five and seven percent for each employee. The board is discussing whether the school system would cover the costs, or charge the employees the increase.
While no decision has been made, school board members embers seemed to be leaning in the direction of charging the increase to employees.
A summer school program improved Standards of Learning scores for 30 students, according to Colonial Beach Elementary School Principal Mary Fisher. Third grade math scores improved from 380 to 425 and English scores increased from 330 to 390. The highest score that can be attained is 600.
Fourth grade math went from 55 percent to 72% and English 63% to 70%. Fifth grade math went from 74% to 80% and English from 65% to 82%.
SOL testing is required by state mandates. The scores help to show where students are at compared to other children in their grade levels as well as the minimum standards required to pass. Each school district offers summer programs and after school programs to help students learn the material.
