Since 1985 the Colonial Beach Triathlon has graced the water and streets of Colonial Beach with world class triathletes competing in two events over the two-day series. Saturday dawned bright and early with the first of the events the Sprint Length Triathlon.

With a field of 249 participants, the first wave of swimmers hit the 82 degree water at 6:50 a.m. but athletes began arriving around five in the morning to get their numbers marked on them with grease pencil, warm up their muscles and check out the first event course, the Potomac River.

Starting near the north end of the boardwalk and going in an L-shape out parallel to the shore the swimmers swam 750 meters on day one before biking 14 miles and running five kilometers. Day one keeps the athletes in Westmoreland County with the majority of the event in town. The bike events take the athletes out to Longfield Road and back to town before the run starts, and finishes, on the boardwalk.
