D.A.R.E. to be different

Officer Karl Wendell retired from police work but came back on the job to help teach Colonial Beach Elementary School students through the D.A.R.E. Program.

For 12 weeks, Officer Wendell walked the students though exercises designed to help them learn to resist peer pressure, avoid drug use and trust in themselves. Modern day D.A.R.E. is different from the program that most former students learned.

In the early 2000s following research that showed the program did not work as hoped, the entire process was revamped to teach students a different way to avoid drug use and peer pressure.
