Mason Delane pitches seven strikeouts.

The month of May is starting well for the Colonial Beach Varsity Baseball team. The Drifters defeated the W&L Eagles and the Northumberland Indians to improve their season record to 5-8. They face some tough competition ahead, but their prospects look good if they continue to swing their bats.
In Montross on Tuesday, May 2nd, the Drifter’s trailed the Eagles 3-0 until the top of the 5th inning when the momentum and the game shifted to the black and gold. With two outs on the board, Cole Setliff hit a fly ball to center field and gained 2 bases. Wyatt Feltner singled to right field driving in Setliff for run number one. Trey Bowler, Mason Delane, Galen Lutz, and Andrew Burrell followed the party around the bases to finish the inning with 6 runs.
Colonial Beach picked up another run in the next inning to secure the winning final score of 7-3. Mason Delane pitched 6 innings throwing 7 strikeouts. Bowler had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s including one double. Austin Phillips slammed a triple and earned 2RBI’s. Feltner also had a great game at the plate with 2 hits including a double. Conner Lutz earned the win in gallant fashion on Thursday, May 4th tallying a no-hitter against conference rival Northumberland. And he did it in his home town. Great baseball for the beach. It was a close game thoughout with solid pitching on both sides. Lutz added 7 strikeouts to his sheet and the Drifters as a whole garnered 4 hits.
A busy week is scheduled for Colonial Beach this week with the team on the road to Rappahannock on Monday, May 8th, at home Tuesday against Lancaster, and home again Thursday versus Essex. Cool spring weather and exciting baseball is a perfect way to spend your afternoon. Come out and cheer on the Drifters! Games at 5 p.m.
