For the first time in five years, the Colonial Beach Lady Drifters will not reach the 1A East Regional Finals. They loss to the Appomattox Regional Governor’s Lady Dragons (56-66) on Wednesday February 22. The Lady Drifters got off to a good start with a (11-9) lead mid-way through the first period. They increased the lead to five then eight (17-9) with 2:05 left. The Lady Dragons scored the next eight points to tie the game (17-17) at the 6:46 mark of the second period. The Lady Drifters posted the next five points to go up (22-17) with 4:10 to play before the half. They went into the break ahead by two (28-26). The lead could have been more; they missed six free-throws late in the second. The Lady Dragons tied the game (33-33) with 4:35 to go in the third then took the lead for the second time (33-36) with 3:10 left. The Lady Drifters would watch the deficit grow as they were down by four at the end of the third (38-42). They were down by ten (38-48) with 5:35 to play and twelve a minute later (41-53) then fifteen (41-56) with 4:18 to go. Back to back three-pointers by Michaela Beverly followed by one from Jordan McGinniss cut the lead to seven (53-60) with 1:20 to go in the game. The Lady Drifters forced 36 turnovers but they couldn’t manage to get any closer to the Lady Dragons. Alexia Wilson and Jordan McGinniss led the team with 15 points. McGinniss said “There was a lot more we could have done to win the game.” Head Coach Keith Dickerson said “We didn’t play well in our last three games. We never filled the lane and that was one of our problems; everything was transitions layups for them.” Congrats to the Lady Drifters on a well-played season.
