The Colonial Beach Lady Drifters varsity basketball team entered the Conference 43 tournament seated first; the same as they had done for the past three years. They came in looking to win their fourth straight conference tournament after winning the regular season in back to back to back to back years. The Lady Drifters did just that they pulled off a (51-44) victory over the Lady Trojans on Saturday February 18 to make a four in a row, and they haven’t loss a conference game over the same span. They faced and defeated the Rappahannock Lady Panthers on February 14 to get to the finals. The Lady Drifters went up (4-2) then (8-4) with five minutes to go in the first. The Lady Trojans scored the next seven points to take an (8-11) advantage after the first eight minutes. They had a six-point lead (9-15) with 4:45 to go in the half. The Lady Drifters went on a run of eight straight points in 45 seconds to lead (17-15); they increased their lead to five (24-19) with 2:15 to go. The Lady Drifters were up (26-21) at the half time horn. The visitors scored the first four points of the third period to make it a (26-25) game. The deficit would range from two to six points for the next six minutes of the third, and the visitor were down (37-35) at the end of three periods played. A spurt by the Lady Drifters put them up by nine (47-38) with five minutes to go in the game. All the momentum looked to be with the Lady Drifters, until the Lady Trojans made a run to cut the lead to (44-47) with 2:40 to play. The Lady Trojans couldn’t find the range to make the game closer and fell to the Lady Drifters (51-44). Head Coach Keith Dickerson said “I told the team not to panic, because we have been here before. I knew they (the Lady Trojans) would fight; they brought it to us. We weren’t sharp, but we pulled it out. We had to slow down, play with composure, and relax.” Players Amber Jones, Alexia Wilson, and Michaela Beverly never loss a conference regular season or playoff game. They said “We won because of defense, heart, hard work, and desire to win.” The Lady Drifters will play a 1A East Regional game at home versus the Appomattox Governors School on Wednesday February 22.
