Washington & Lee High School, working with the Northern Neck Food Bank, gleaned produce from local fields five mornings Aug. 5-9, collecting over 22,000 pounds of food for hungry people. A total of 106 volunteers – students, family members, faculty, coaches, and alumni – gathered corn and potatoes from fields in Westmoreland County which the food bank distributed to food pantries in the Northern Neck and across eastern Virginia.
W&L Gleaning Week was a cooperative effort of several student organizations including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, Ruriteens, and Varsity Club. However, top recognition goes to athletes and coaches from the Cheerleading, Cross-Country, Football, and Volleyball teams for their impressive turnouts. The award for the highest daily total went to the Football team and others who picked over 6,700 pounds of corn on Tuesday. Student MVP was Gabe Loesel who participated all five days.
