The W&L Eagles varsity football team was home against the Rappahannock Raiders on Friday, September 20. The Eagles scored early and often to win (53-26). They scored on their second possession behind a James ‘LJ’ Kelly one-yard run and a (7-0) lead. The Raiders had to punt the ball back to the home team and they scored for the second time off a ‘LJ’ Kelly seven-yard run to go up (14-0). Three turnovers halted any momentum the Raiders had in the second quarter and the Eagles continued to light up the scoreboard. The home team reached the end zone three times; ‘LJ’ Kelly posted two more scores one from 62 yards and the other from 35 to make it (27-0). Quarterback Christian Mountjoy called his own number and reached the goal line from nine yards out to put his team ahead (33-0) at the half. The Eagles special team did have two extra points blocked. The Eagles scored again Kindrick Smith went up the left sideline from 21 yards out early in the third to make it (40-0). The Raiders found a rhythm and scored on a Kahlique ‘KJ’ Gaines run (6-40). Ke’Vaun Brown scooped up a fumble and rumbled 55 yards for a touchdown (40-13) mid-way through the third. The home team ‘LJ’ Kelly hit the end zone for the fifth time from four yards to push the score to (46-13). The Raiders were successful on two field goals (46-19). DeWayne Smith scored from three yards out to put the Eagles up (53-19) early in the fourth. ‘KJ’ Gaines got his second rushing touchdown for a final score of (53-26). ‘LJ’ Kelly had 174 yards with 5 td’s, Kindrick Smith 94 yards with 1 td, Christian Mountjoy 59 yards with 1 td. W&L will play at King William on Friday, September 27.
