The W&L Eagles varsity basketball team won two games on the final seconds against the Essex Trojans on Monday, February 4 and the Colonial Beach Drifters on Tuesday, February 5. The Eagles were at the Trojans and first on the scoreboard (3-0). The Trojans tied the game (8-8) with 3:49 to play in the first period and took their first lead (9-10) forty-nine seconds later. The home team held their advantage at the end of the first (11-16); they went up by nine (11-20) at the 6:44 mark of the second. A (15-7) run spurred by defensive pressure pulled the Eagles within one point (26-27) with 2:08 to play in the half. They were up (30-29) at the half. The teams traded baskets and the lead in the first part of the third period until the Trojans went ahead by four (35-39) with 3:53 to go. A three-pointer made it a one-point game (38-39) then another bucket gave the Eagles the lead (40-39). The Trojans tied the game again (46-46) with less than a minute to play and were up (46-48) with one quarter to go. The game was tied again in the fourth (48-48) and the teams traded baskets again with the Eagles John ‘JD’ Day Jr and the Trojans Tamaje Jones doing most of the scoring. Head Coach George Hunter said, “The Trojans Tamaje Jones is a heck of a player; he hit some difficult shots to make it tough on us. Our scorer John ‘JD’ Day Jr kept us in the game by hitting some big shots.” The Eagles were ahead again (53-52) before making it a four-point game (58-54) with 2:35 left. The home team came back again to tie the game (60-60) with 1:12 to go in the game. The Eagles took the lead for the last time (62-60) with a couple of free-throws and held the Trojans scoreless to get the victory. John ‘JD’ Day Jr had 38pts, 3reb, 4ast, 4stl, JJ McNeil 17pts, 11reb, 4ast, 3stl, Shane McNeil 4pts, 8reb, 3blks, 2stl, and Devy Reed 3pts, 1reb, 1ast. The Eagles were home versus their cross-county rival the Colonial Beach Drifters on Tuesday and it was another close game.
