Eagles resume work again

Washington & Lee’s Riney Brown and the Eagles are looking to bounce back from their success last season.

A dramatic ending for the Washington & Lee (W&L) Baseball Team came when they were forced out of playoff contention to a district rival foe. With so much work in done to prepare for that season, the Eagles look to bounce back under the direction of their coach Michael Clark.

Finishing second in the district with a record of 7-3, Clark said it was the best finish at W&L in quite some time.

“It was unfortunate that we lost two games in a row to Essex, certainly; but as far as W&L baseball goes- last year was a success,” said Clark. “There are only three players on this year’s team that were around for last season so I haven’t shared much with them at all—just let them know that it is now their turn.”

W&L graduated several players including all district selections Josh Fones, Grady Boswell, Dylan Clark and D.A. Wilson. But Carrington Balderson, all district third baseman, returns to the team and will see some time on the pitcher’s mound.

“We didn’t do anything different this offseason that we have any year in the past,” Clark said. “Carrington and Riney [Brown] put in a lot of bullpen work which was definitely necessary considering neither pitched many innings last season.”

Clark will be losing a coach this in Drew Hutt, as he will head up the JV baseball team. Nate Deban and Chris Smith are my varsity assistant coaches.

In the team’s first regular season game, they defeated Chancellor 3-2.

Balderson pitched six innings allowing only two to go along with five strikeouts.
